Thirty-some years ago, Sarasota County voters approved a referendum that added mandatory recycling to the county charter. The recycling program required residents living in the unincorporated county to recycle things like paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminum and steel cans through a dual-stream collection system. Residents had to separate their recyclable materials and place them into two bins for collection.
Fast-forward to 2019…Sarasota County is heading toward Recycling 2.0 and implementing single-stream recycling. Residents in unincorporated Sarasota County will continue to recycle many of the same materials but will now be able to place all recyclable materials together in one recycling cart.
