Indigenous Americans flowed into Florida to escape wars to the north. The Florida Indians collectively became known as Seminole, a name meaning “wild people” or “runaway.” Many free Black people living in the area and runaway slaves also joined the Seminoles. After broken treaties and three wars, the Seminoles were forced to march to Oklahoma in the early 1800s. Estimates are that 3,000 Seminoles perished on the “Trail of Tears.”
